GSWL donates electric poles to five communities

Tarkwa, Feb 16, GNA – Golden Star Wassa Limited (GSWL), a mining company based at Wassa Akyempim, has donated 150 electric poles valued at 500 million cedis to five communities in its area of operation. The communities are Kubekro, Nsadweso, Old Subri, Anyinabriem and Akyempim in the Wassa Mpohor East District.

Mr Richard Gray, the General Manager, said the donation was the first project to be financed out of Golden Star Resources Community Development Endowment Fund.

He said with the supply of the poles, those communities would be considered in the Self Help Electrification Project (SHEP) scheme being undertaken by government.

Mr Gray said the company would continue to contribute to the Fund, and that one dollar on every ounce of gold would go into it. He said the growth of the Fund would help finance development projects in the area but the success of it depends largely on the communities.

Mr Gray pleaded with the chiefs and elders of the communities to work hand in hand with the mine to maintain cordial relations. Nana Kwame Andoh, the acting divisional chief of Manponso who received the poles on behalf of the communities, thanked the company. He appealed to the security personnel in the area to ensure peaceful co-existence between the mine and the communities.
