GSSM students to picket at the Flagstaff House

Students of the Ghana School of Surveying and Mapping (GSSM) have threatened to picket the Flagstaff House if President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo does not intervene to stop the closure of the school on the orders of the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources.

Mr Amewu gave the order following following recent clashes between the students and some land guards over the school land on Tuesday, May 2, 2017.

Mr Amewu also ordered that the school’s staff be reassigned.

SRC president Bright Joseph Nsiah, reacting to the development in a press conference in Accra on Wednesday 10 May, called on Mr Akufo-Addo to intervene and prevent the school from being closed down or they picket to demonstrate their displeasure with the directive.

“Our next action is to march to the office of the presidency and if the need arises that we need to spend the night, we would do that. The students of Ghana School of Surveying and Mapping are ever ready. As it happened with the nurses, definitely we can do same, we would sleep over there. We want to protect and defend the legacy of Sir Gordon Guggisburg,” he stated.

“Can you go to Achimota School and ask them to vacate their premises? Can you go to the University of Ghana and ask them to vacate their premises? So why are you treating the ordinary students of Ghana School of Surveying and Mapping this way? It is unfair and we demand immediate intervention from the presidency,” he added.

There are allegations that the school land has been sold to some foreign investors to build a shopping mall but the Lands Commission has denied it saying the place has been reserved for the construction of its head office.
