Group promotes ICT education in schools in Ashanti Region

Kumasi, Jan. 26, GNA – A group of experts have come together to promote Information, Communication Technology (ICT) education among students in senior high schools in the Ashanti Region. They had so far established ICT clubs in seven schools including T.I Ahmadiyya, Yaa Asantewaa Girls, Opoku Ware, Prempeh College, St. Louis, Kumasi Wesley Girls and Angel Educational Complex. Mr Alidu Tiah, leader of the group, who go by the name “Ashanti ICT”, told the Ghana News Agency in Kumasi that members would be holding regular ICT clinics to expose the students to software and hardware programmes relevant to their education.

This, he said, would in the long term, help them to become competent in the use of the computers to aid the development of their careers. Mr Tiah said outsourcing and export of IT and software services were becoming important source of economic activity and income for many emerging economies. He therefore called on the government to focus on improving access to the Internet and telecommunication facilities to increase Information Technology literacy. Mr Tiah said government could for instance liaise with corporate bodies, ICT companies and stakeholders to reduce the cost of personal computers for students so that they could have access to information needed for their development. 26 Jan. 10
