GRIDCO puts Capacitor Banks in service at Achimota

Accra, Dec 2, GNA – Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCO) has successfully put into service a total of 40MVar of Capacitor Banks at the Achimota Sub-Station with an attendant improvement in system voltages across the network.

In a statement in Accra on Thursday, Mr Norbert Anku, Director of Engineering, said the voltages had been increased by about three kV at the Achimota Sub-Station, two kV at the main Switchyard in Tema and Akosombo, with commensurate major reductions in the Akosombo generator reactive power production.

“The commissioning of the Capacitor Banks is part of a two-phased project for the installation of the Capacitor Bank equipment in key sub-stations across the network to address the issue of low voltages especially during the peak periods.” Apart from the Achimota substation, the Winneba, Takoradi, Techiman, Smelter, Sunyani and Kpando substations would all benefit during the Phase One of the project. All equipment for the first phase are in the country, the statement said.

“GRIDCO hopes to commission an additional two sets of the Capacitor Banks at the Takoradi substation before December 17, 2010,” it added. 02 Dec. 10
