GRI NEWSREEL Ban Importation Of Coffin – Commission On Culture

Accra, August 19, –The National Commission on Culture (CNC) has called on Ghanaians to stop the importation of coffins, Nana Brefo Boateng, Acting CNC chief director told GRi in Accra. Nana Boateng said countries like the United States, Australia, France and others from where these coffins are mostly imported, have expressed appreciation for the technology and style used by Ghanaian coffin manufacturing companies and ”are placing orders for them”. He said it has been observed that Ghanaians have in recent times taken to the importation of expensive foreign-made coffins in a negative competition to out-do one another in funeral expenditure. “Besides the country abounds in the best and the finest of woods which coffin makers use. For these reasons, Nana Boateng said, there is no justification for the importation of coffins. The CNC therefore supports the call on the government, by the Omanhene of Goaso , Osabarima Adjei Ampofo, for the banning of the importation of coffins. He appealed to bereaved families to desist from burying their dead with expensive jewellery, gold ornaments and clothings since these attract grave looters.
