Greater Accra PSWU holds monthly meeting

Brother Martin Kofi Boateng, Principal Industrial Relations Officer of the Greater Accra branch of the Public Services Workers Union (PSWU), has called on workers to adapt to the changing trends of the labour market.

“Things are changing in industrial relations, and that, the way negotiations are being undertaking has equally changed”.

Brother Martin Kofi Boateng said this during a monthly meeting in Accra.

There is, therefore, the need for organized labour to update themselves, to enable them to make proactive decisions to help handle emerging challenges successfully, he said.

Brother Kofi Boateng said the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) has completed its part of the negotiations, but is awaiting government to begin the implementation process.

The gathering was unanimous with the negotiations on the “update of categories II and III allowances” that had delayed and therefore, wanted to know why the stalemate, and also discussed the welfare issues militating against the Union and its members.

Members stressed their dissatisfaction about the delay in the implementation and noted that, workers were being denied their legitimate incentives, which is not in the best interest of workers.

In his contribution, Brother Moses A. Bawa, Vice Chairman of the Ghana News Agency (GNA) Division of PSWU said: “the review of Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), has become highly impossible, as a result of undue delay on the matter”.

Brother Benjamin Sam, Greater Accra PSWU Chairman, commended members for championing the cause of unionized workers in the country and advised members to follow due process in addressing their grievances.

He said he was committed to ensuring that all post-migration challenges pertaining to the Single Spine Salary Structure were fully addressed.

Brother Sam said “when (the issue) was fully addressed, it would ensure that workers were not made worse-off as a result of the implementation of the new pay policy”.
