Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang received a warm and emotional welcome at Kotoka International Airport on Thursday, May 22, 2025, as she returned to Ghana following a period of medical treatment in the United Kingdom.
President John Dramani Mahama and First Lady Mrs. Lordina Mahama led a high-profile delegation to receive her, alongside Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, Vice Presidential Chief of Staff Alex Segbefia, other senior government officials, clergy, and close family members. The atmosphere at the airport was one of relief, gratitude, and renewed hope.
In a brief but heartfelt address to the press and supporters, the Vice President expressed deep appreciation for the overwhelming support she received during her recovery. “I want to say thanks to God, His mercies have been infinite, as always, and I’m very grateful,” she said, reflecting on her health journey.
She praised her medical team for their professionalism and early intervention. “I express gratitude to the medical staff too, for seeing the right thing, for making the right proposals,” she said, acknowledging the role their timely decisions played in her treatment.
A visibly emotional Prof. Opoku-Agyemang also shared personal gratitude to President Mahama for his swift response during a critical moment in her health crisis. “That day, I don’t know where you appeared from, but he came and quickly set in motion what we needed to do,” she recounted.
She didn’t leave out Ibrahim Mahama, younger brother of the President, who she described as a pillar of strength during her recovery. “He stopped at nothing to ensure that I had what I needed. And then he also came to the hospital. He came to sit by me, and that was healing itself.”
Looking forward, the Vice President affirmed her commitment to resume work with renewed energy and focus. “There’s so much that has happened, that we all need to do, and I know that with a collective will, we’ll do much more for our country.”
Her return marks a significant moment for the administration as it continues its development agenda, now with the full leadership team back in place.
