GRASAG-KNUST President Calls On Gov’t To Set Up A National Research Fund

The President of the KNUST branch of the Graduate Students’ Association of Ghana (GRASAG), Evangel Adu-Boadu is urging government to set up a fund for graduate Students’ projects rather than the existing grants which is woefully inadequate.
Members of the Graduate Students’ Association of Ghana (GRASAG) have appealed to government to participate in funding of postgraduate education in Ghana and review the 2010/2011 academic year fees downward.
In relation to the appeal, the KNUST GRASAG president, Mr. Evangel Adu- Boadu in an interview with focus News’ Bernard Buachi, said the major challenge that graduate students face is the issue of funding, adding that graduate studies is all about research and research calls for financial investments.
He continued that though there is a bursary for post graduate students, it is woefully inadequate citing that an MSc/MA student receives GH¢69.00 whiles MPhil students are offered GH¢150.00.
He advocates for a National Research fund to replace the annual grant per student. This is because not all post graduate students might need the grant while others need more than the amount given.
In an earlier communiqué issued on July 8, 2010 ater the National Dialogue on Postgraduate Education in Ghana, GRASAG asked University authorities to make available online, the learning resources that were needed by Distance Learning Postgraduate students by the beginning of the 2010/2011 academic year.
