Grandma puts grandson’s foot in fire

Ashaiman, Sept 28, GNA – The Ashaiman Office of the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU), is investigating a case in which a grandmother reportedly burnt the right foot of her seven-year-old grandson.

Elizabeth Darree, alias Ajara, is said to have burnt the grandson’s foot as a punishment for his stubbornness. Chief Inspector Olivia Turkson, Tema Regional Police Public Relations Officer, who disclosed this to the Ghana News Agency, in Tema, on Tuesday, said at about 1000 hours, on September 26, the Police received information from an informant that the woman, a resident of Ashaiman New Town, had put the hand of the victim, Yaw Jotepe into fire. Chief Inspector Turkson said investigations revealed that Darree dipped the left hand and right foot of the victim into water and fire, respectively.

The PRO indicated that the woman claimed that the victim often went out and returned home late. She further stated that after committing the crime, Darree warned the boy and other relatives not to tell anybody of the incident, adding that, the mother of the victim even declined to talk about her son’s predicament.

Chief Inspector Turkson stated that the victim, who is on admission at the Meridian Clinic at Tema Community One, confided in the Police and confirmed that the grandmother burnt his foot. According to the Police PRO, the victim indicated that his grandmother instructed him to tell Health and Police Officials that he fell into boiling water in an attempt to get some food from the kitchen. Chief Inspector Turkson said Darree has been invited by the Police for interrogation and that she would be put before court after investigations. Darree, she said, would be charged with causing harm and deceit of a public officer. 28 Sept. 10
