The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has ordered its drivers to revert transport fares to the original prices.
Commercial bus drivers across the country have increased fares following an upward adjustment of fuel prices by 7% last week.
But the Ghana Private Road Transport Union says a decision to increase fares is yet to be taken.
Stephen Okudzeto, General Secretary of the Union told Radio XYZ that drivers must reverse the increment since the union has not authorized it.
“No we haven’t [asked them to increase fares] our union is a well-structured one and the national secretariat takes decisions on national issues.
“We are equally embarrassed and we have made a passionate appeal to the drivers to revert the fares because we heard some drivers have increased the fares on their own…so we can only appeal to them,” he added.
Meanwhile, some commercial drivers insist the Union officially communicated the supposed fare increases to them.
“The GPRTU asked us to increase the fares so yesterday we started charging the fare…we can’t use our powers to increase the fares,” a driver in Accra told Radio XYZ.
