Accra, Aug. 8 GNA – Mr Henry Quansah, General Manager at the Odorna Welfare Branch of Ghana Private Road Transport Union, on Monday stressed the need for drivers and their mates to be educated on the civil rights of the public to avoid tension and confrontation between passengers on one hand and drivers and their mates on the other. He explained that such confrontations were not good for both groups either at the lorry parks or on vehicles. He said such confrontations on vehicles disrupted the driver’s concentration and could lead to accidents.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency in Accra Mr Quansah said such quarrels arose because many of the drivers were not aware that passengers had rights, which had to be respected. He cited instances where trotro and taxi drivers had been rude to passengers with some drivers engaging in open confrontation with passengers and, in some cases, their mates. Mr Quansah said the Odorna Branch of than GPRTU had set up a disciplinary committee to sanction drivers, who misbehaved towards their passengers. The committee also imposed fines on drivers who “drink and drive”.
Mr Quansah appealed to passengers to respect and comport themselves to make the work of the drivers easy. 08 Aug. 05
