The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and Concerned Drivers Association are organizing a massive protest in Accra tomorrow September 16, 2025 to oppose the alleged takeover of land designated for lorry stations by private investors.
The demonstration, expected to draw thousands of drivers, aims to petition the government to intervene and protect the land earmarked for commercial transport operations at the Cocoa Marketing Board (CMB) area.
The drivers union’s will march to the Jubilee House to present a formal petition to the president.
The protest has garnered support from market women who fear losing their livelihoods if the takeover proceeds. They’ve appealed to the Vice President and First Lady to intervene, warning that thousands of traders and informal workers would be displaced.
The land is designated for vital transport infrastructure, and the unions argue that private development would disrupt the city’s transport network.
Meanwhile, market women and traders depend on the lorry stations for their income, and the takeover would jeopardize their businesses.
The GPRTU and Concerned Drivers Association says they are determined to send a strong message to both private investors and the government about the gravity of the situation.
The said protest may cause disruptions to transport services and commuter traffic across the city.
