GPL: Hearts of Oak Close in on Top Four with 3-1 Win Over Accra Lions

Accra Hearts of Oak have revived their push for a top-four finish in the 2024–2025 Ghana Premier League after a convincing 3-1 win over Accra Lions at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The victory moves the Phobians within two points of fourth-placed Kumasi Asante Kotoko, as the league approaches its final stretch. Hearts now sit on 52 points, having played 32 matches, one more than most teams in the league.

Enock Asubonteng opened the scoring for Hearts in the 11th minute with a low strike that Lions goalkeeper Daniel Afful failed to stop. Despite some pressure from the visitors, Hearts extended their lead late in the game through goals from Kwesi Asmah in the 79th minute and Hamza Issah in the 88th.

The result leaves Accra Lions in a precarious position, 16th in the 18-team table and level on 35 points with 15th-placed Karela United. Lions now face a tense relegation battle with just three matches remaining.

Karela United will play 14th-placed Vision FC on Sunday, 25 May, in a crucial fixture that could determine who stays in the top flight.

Hearts of Oak, meanwhile, will face Legon Cities and FC Samartex in their final two matches on 1 and 8 June, as they look to cement a spot in the league’s top four.

With the title already out of reach, Hearts’ focus now turns to finishing strong and possibly securing a spot in continental competition next season.
