Tema, Oct. 15 GNA – The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) on Friday presented two Pick-Ups costing 494.2 million cedis to the Railways/Ports Police stations at the Tema and Takoradi ports to enhance security operations. The vehicles would be used solely for patrol duties within the two ports.
Making the presentation at Tema, Mr John Dei, General Manager of the Legal Department of the GPHA said the recent increase in the crime wave necessitates that the police be adequately equipped to combat crime, which has now become sophisticated. He said though the government, in recent times has resourced the Ghana Police Service, the GPHA’s gesture is a supplementary measure to its efforts to go a long way to promote the work. Mr Dei gave the assurance that the GPHA would fuel the two vehicles and undertake the maintenance work at its workshop but said that they would be restricted to the port area patrols.
He hoped with this, the fraudsters operating in the ports, smuggling of containers and diversion of cargo would cease. Tema Regional Police Commander, ACP Daniel Laryea Odai received the keys to the vehicles and promised that they would be used for the intended purpose. 15 Oct. 05
