Gov’t will sponsor NDC supporters to Brazil – Minister

Deputy Sports Minister, Joseph Yamin, has categorically stated that among the 500 supporters government will be sponsoring to Brazil for the FIFA 2014 World Cup, grass root supporters of the National Democratic Congress [NDC] will have the majority number.

According to him, if his comment will cost him his position he is ever ready.

He explained that NDC supporters deserve to be appreciated for their immense support to helping bring back the party into power in 2008.

“If we are sending supporters to Brazil, I will say it and say it again that Ghanaians will go but the majority will come from the NDC supporters. If that will cost me my job, I don’t care. I have done my duty and know what the NDC supporters did to bring NDC into power so if we are sending supporters, we will definitely send supporters, but NDC supporters will benefit more, I will not hide that,” he said.

Sports Minister, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, has disclosed that government through sponsorship will be taking 500 supporters to Brazil for the 2014 World Cup which will kick-start on Thursday June 12, 2014.

According to the ministry, government has secured the assistance of private corporate bodies to assist in sponsoring Ghanaians to support the national team at the World Cup.

The supporters will be airlifted from the 13, 14, and 15 June 2014 to Brazil in batches. However, Joseph Yamin has opined that the New Patriotic Party [NPP] did a similar thing by airlifting about 250 supporters to the World Cup in Germany 2006.

He further stated that; “whether they like it or not, NDC supporters will be the majority to go to Brazil. I will not be a hypocrite and sit down here; they [NDC supporters] have to benefit from the party they brought to power”.
