The 1994 year group of the Ghana Secondary Technical School (GSTS) over the weekend called on government to allow parents to contribute towards the running of the various senior high schools across the country.
Their contribution in the form of levy and other dues could, according to the group, augment in repair works, provision of better sanitary facilities and general administration of the school.
The 1994 year group made these remarks during a home coming ceremony and a facility tour of the school.
Mr. Ralph Menz, Secretary and Treasurer of the group, told the Ghana News Agency that the group was disappointed at the state of deterioration, particularly the sanitary facilities which had serious health implications.
Most of the dormitories are over populated with trunks and chop boxes of students packed on the corridors.
Mr. Menz said “government should not stop parents from paying levies all in the name of free education.”
He also entreated government and the Ghana Education Service to involve old students in the governance of the schools.
The group climaxed their tour with an annual general meeting and a dinner dance.
