Gov’t to strengthen chieftaincy institution

Dr Henry Seidu Daanaa, Minister of Chieftaincy and Culture says Government is committed to the strengthening of the Chieftaincy Institution to add value to the economic development of the country.

He said chieftaincy cannot be a powerful Institution unless chiefs sacrifice a lot and partner the government to execute developmental programmes and projects to improve the livelihood of the people.

Dr Daanaa was speaking at a durbar of chiefs and people of Assin Manso as part of the celebration of Tutu festival and 45th Anniversary of Barima Kwame Nkyi XII, Paramount Chief of Assin Apimanim, at Assin Manso.

He therefore urged all and sundry especially stakeholders in the chieftaincy industry to work together to promote and sustain the institution.

“If we in the chieftaincy industry contribute our quota in our community, we will go a long the way to supplement government efforts at creating an enabling environment to live in,” he said.

Dr Daanaa expressed the need for Ghanaians irrespective of their colour, religion, ethnicity and political affiliations to put the past behind them and work together to promote the socio-economic development of the country.

Barima Nkyi XII who is also the President of Assin Apimanim Traditional Council said Tutu festival is celebrated annually by Assin Apimanim people to commemorate their migration from Ashanti Region to their present settlement in the 16th Century.

He added that, the period is also used to take stock of activities carried in the previous year and aspects of the welfare and development of the traditional area.

Barima Nkyi XII drew the attention of Minister of Chieftaincy and Culture to the recommendations made by the drafters of the 1992 Constitution that aims at making local governance devoid of partisan politics to develop “a government of the people for the people and by the people”.
