Govt to strengthen access to ICT traing in rural areas

The government has signaled its determination to provide people in the rural areas with the opportunity for information and communication technology (ICT) skills training.

Mr. Kwabena Owusu Achampong, Administrator of the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC), said the Community Information Centres (CICs) would be supported to efficiently function.

They would be provided with the needed logistics and equipment vital to the effort of bridging the digital divide between the urban and the rural communities.

He was addressing a three-day training of trainers workshop held for 53 managers of the centres selected from districts across the nation at the JAK ICT Centre in Nkwantakese in the Afigya-Kwabre District.

The goal was to introduce them to new ideas and technologies to enhance the operations of the centres.

Mr. Achampong reminded the managers to find new ways of doings things to get more people – farmers, drivers, mechanics, dressmakers and traders, to learn the basic computer skills.

This, he said, was the way forward to make sure that nobody was left behind by globalization, to aid the nation to benefit from the emerging economic revolution.

He counseled them to be professional in their approach and work with passion to achieve the purpose for, which the CICs were established.

Mr. Salifu Siisu, the Gambaga CIC Manager, asked for the supply of personal laptop computers and smart phones for research and communication.

The training programme was organized under the theme “Enhancing communication services”.
