The government is to investigate the looting of the assets of the Asutsuare Sugar Factor in 1996 and 2000 and make the culprits to face the law.
The vice-president, Alhaji Aliu Mahama, stated this at the weekend when he addressed a durbar of the chiefs and people of the Osudoku Traditional Area at Osudoku in the Dangme West District, meant to mark their annual Dzehayem festival.
The assets of the Asutsuare Sugar factory valued at several billions of cedis were alleged to have been looted in 1996 and 2000, under the guise of an auction and at a time the factor was listed for divestiture.
Proceeds from the said auction, are allegedly still in the custody of the auctioneer, who was then the MP for Fomena. The fate of the factory has been a manor source of instability in the area, with the people occasionally coming into confrontation with the authorities involved in the divestiture progress.
The vice president told the people that the divestiture implementation committee had been charged to speed up the divestiture process and would soon identify a prospective investor to take over the sugar estate.
