Gov’t sets up inter-ministerial C’tee to help ease Fulani menace

Government has tasked an inter-ministerial committee to develop strategies to address challenges associated with nomadic activities in the country.

There have been a number of agitations against nomadic activities in the country amidst some pocket of fierce clashes with locals and nomads in several areas of the country, particularly in Agogo in the Ashanti region and the Fanteakwa district in the Eastern region.

Interior Minister, Prosper Bani has directed the team set in place a six month timeline to look into the issues confronting the country in relation to nomadic activities and prescribe actions for government for the long term solutions to the menace.

“Just to remind you and re-emphasize that you cannot through this works stop the movement of nomadic herdsmen. We need to manage that process. It is a lifestyle that predates us and we need to manage it and eventually provide a mechanism where this dialogues are that which provide community peace and development,” he stated.

Many say the apparent impunity by a section of herdsmen suggests that government’s action to deal with the menace has been slow.

Since the early 2000, the Fulani herdsmen menace has become a security challenge.

There are nomadic herdsmen scattered in all parts of the country and mostly concentrated in Agogo, Begoro, and parts of the Volta and Greater Accra regions.
