Govt releases Ghc50m feeding grant

Government has released 50.4 million Ghana cedis to clear arrears incurred by the schools in the three regions of the North.

The money will also cater for feeding fees for the 2014/2015 academic year.

About 83 Senior High Schools (SHSs) in the three regions of northern Ghana were partially re-opened by admitting only final-year students early this week due to the delay in releasing the feeding grant.

Heads of school threatened to shutdown SHSs in the northern regions as a result of the non-payment of two terms’ feeding subsidies owed them by the government.

The affected schools include: 44 in the Northern Region, 23 in the Upper East Region and 16 in the Upper West Region.

But Public Relations Officer for the Education Ministry, Paul Krampa said with the release of the funds by the Finance Ministry, the schools should be able to run their affairs smoothly.
