Gov’t is not perturbed by criticism against NHIS – JAK

Mamponteng (Ash), Aug 25, GNA – President John Agyekum Kufuor on Sunday said government is not perturbed by criticisms against the implementation of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) because it is the best option to provide better healthcare delivery to the people. He appealed to Parliament to speed up the adoption of the Bill for its implementation before the end of the year.
“We will not allow any impediment in our way towards the implementation of the NHIS,” he said.
President Kufuor was addressing the chiefs and people of the Kwabre District at Mamponteng as part of his tour of the Ashanti Region. He said the people voted for the government to serve them and it would pursue policies and programmes beneficial to the people to improve their living standards and sustain their confidence in good governance.
Nana Opoku Agyeman III, Adwumakase-Kesehene, said the NHIS is a viable alternative means of providing better healthcare to the people. He said the cash and carry system failed the people because many people who could not afford the cost of medication died.
“We are absolutely in support of the government’s vision to implement the NHIS. We are, however, aware of the parliamentary bottlenecks in enacting the Bill. Do not be daunted by these problems, push forward for mother Ghana,” he said.
Nana Agyeman commended the government for the establishment of the National Reconciliation Commission (NRC) that sought to unite the people.
He said the people have now come out to air the injustices meted out to them and have now learnt to put the past behind them and chart a new course.
