Gov’t increases minimum wage to Ghc6

The tripartite committee has agreed a new minimum wage of Ghc6. The minimum wage for 2013 was Ghc5.24. The increase represents about 14.5 percent.

There’s however a stalemate between Government and Labour over the Cost of Living Allowance (COLA). It is an allowance which is paid at a go toward cushioning labour against economic pressures.

The Government has offered to pay a 5% increase in COLA but the latter insists on a 10% increase.

The Committee is expected to meet deep into the night to agree a compromise figure.

Labour had threatened to roll out drastic actions against the Government if it had frozen wage increments for 2014 as hinted by the Finance Minister months ago. Labour said Government needed to announce a new minimum wage before Thursday, May Day.
