Successive governments since the adoption of the 1992 constitution and the return of the country into multi-party democracy have failed the nation in the areas of waste management in the country.
According to the Ga South Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Jerry Akwei Thompson, no government has prioritised waste management in their agenda of making the country a better place to live.
The issue of waste management and a dumping site has become one of the major challenges facing the country. Cleanness as the saying goes, is next to Godliness; but Government has not prioritized the issue of waste management in Ghana.
Hon. Jerry Akwei Thompson who seems to have a passion for waste management expressed his disappointment with Government officials on how they address the issue in the country.
In an interview with this reporter at his office in Accra indicated that, waste management should be a concern to everybody in the country despite political differences.
He said, currently, the country’s lack of resources makes it difficult for the issue of waste to be addressed.
“This should be an issue that all of us should be worried about; not that there is no good management in the country, but we don’t take the issue of waste serious,” Hon. Thompson added.
It would be recalled that, late last year, the residents of Abokobi in the Ga East Municipality held a press conference calling on authorities to, as a matter of urgency, address the issue of waste management in the community.
In his conclusion, the Ga South M.C.E disclosed that, waste management should be the most top priority than any other thing, adding, “because if we are able to manage our waste properly, all kinds of diseases associated with it will minimize in the country and this will help to increase productivity as people will spend more time to work. We cannot define the rate of waste we have in Ghana, so let’s make waste management a priority”.
