Government would assist teachers in deprived areas

Asankrangwa (W/R), Dec.6, GNA- Mr Samuel Alberto Tekyi, District Chief Executive for Wassa Amenfi has stressed government’s determination to reward teachers and other workers in deprived communities.

He said this would include regular in-service training programmes for teachers, circuit supervisors and other officers who accept postings to such areas.

He was speaking at this year’s District Best Teacher Awards ceremony at Asankrangwa, during which 14 teachers and four workers were honoured for their dedicated service.

They were presented with television sets, radio cassette players, certificates and 100,000 cedis cash.

Mr Terkyi said schools in difficult areas would be provided with facilities and that 1,400 needy pupils in the district would be supplied with uniforms and exercise books free of charge.

Since 2000, the District Assembly had constructed 27 new classroom blocks for basic schools in the district, rehabilitated 48 existing ones and donated 200 million cedis towards the provision of facilities at the Asankrangwa Secondary Technical and Vocational School, he said. Mr Maxwell Ayuub Morghan, the District Director of Education commended the award winners and said this should spur them on to win national awards.

He said the District moved from 27th position in 2003 to 18th position in 2004 in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) results. He commended the District Assembly for its support to improve facilities in schools to enhance teaching and learning.
