Government Will Support Redeployees – Director

Akosombo (Eastern Region), 30 Oct., The government will support individuals who will be laid off under the envisaged public sector reform programme to seek other avenues of employment. In this regard, redeployed labour will be relocated within the district assemblies and the informal private sector to fully develop the economy. This was stated by Mr. Kofi Asante-Frimpong, Director of Entrepreneurship Development Department of the National Board for Small Scale Industries (NBSSI) at Akosombo on Wednesday. He was presenting a paper titled ”Alternative Strategies for the Restructured Public Service” at a two-day workshop on Public Sector Re-invention and Modernization. More than 50 chief executives of institutions in the public and private sectors are attending the workshop aimed at building consensus on key strategies being proposed by the National Institutional Renewal Programme (NIRP) to reform and modernize the public service. Mr. Asante-Frimpong said the programme will start six months before people are declared redundant to make it ready to receive redeployees. Highlights of the reform programme presented by representatives of the civil service, subvented organizations and state-owned enterprises point to improvements and efficiency in the economy and public administration system. Transactions between the private sector and government are also expected to be ”fast, clear and on an even keel as private sector considerations would be followed into the decision-making process”. According to the highlights, improvements in the quality of products are expected with more participation of private sector and non-governmental organizations. The NIRP will in November submit to cabinet a strategic framework to guide reforms and modernization of the public service.
