Awutu-Brachire (C/R), June 23, GNA – Roads linking farming communities in the Awutu-Bontrase area of the Central Region have deteriorated following the recent heavy rains. Commercial drivers plying the roads have therefore, decided to withdraw their services unless the roads are rehabilitated to avoid frequent breakdown of their vehicles.
Mr. Razak Asumah, alias “Unless God” Awutu-Obrachire Chairman of the Ghana Private Road transport Union (GPRTU) announced this at an emergency meeting with executive officers of the union at Awutu-Obrachire on Thursday. Mr. Razak Asumah appealed to the drivers who ply the affected routes to exercise restraint, adding that their decision to withdraw their services will severely affect the transportation of goods and services in the area if it is implemented. Some of the badly-damaged roads in the area included Bontrase-Awutu Beraku road, Bontrase-Odasum, and Awutu Kwadwo Acquah-Akuaku roads.
Mr. Razak Asumah appealed to the Government to strive to rehabilitate the affected roads, including the Obrachire-Beraku road, before the people celebrate their annual Akomasi/Awubia festivbal in September. Mr. Razak Asumah further called on the Government to impress upon the contractor executing the Bontrase-JeiKrodua road to Complete, as a matter of urgency the bridge over the stream at the outskirt of Awutu-Bontrase.
Similarly, the contractor, who executed the first phase of the Obrachire-Awutu-Beraku road should be compelled to give second coat of bitumen to avoid shoddy work and waste. He lamented that due to the shoddy work put up by the contractor, the road, which was rehabilitated recently has started developing dangerous potholes.
