Kumasi, Nov. 6, GNA – An appeal has been made to the government to consider decentralising the Labour Commission to the regional level. Mr. Opoku Agyemang Prempeh, Executive Director of the Center for Moral Education (CEMED), a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) with the focus of enhancing good morals among the youth, who made the appeal, suggested that such a decentralisation process should not be limited to the regions but extended to the districts.
Mr. Prempeh made the appeal in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Kumasi on Sunday, on the significance of the Labour Commission and how it would have an impact on the labour front. He stressed that decentralisation of the Commission was crucial since it was only through such a process that it could make the desired impact and transform the labour front.
Mr. Prempeh also stressed the need to embark on a massive and sustained education to enlighten workers on the objectives of the Commission and the rationale behind its establishment. He said such an educational drive would enhance the understanding of workers on the importance of the Commission to strengthen their recognition to encourage them to use it in resolving grievances at their work places.
Mr. Prempeh entreated workers to pass all their grievances through it for arbitration and resolution.
He advised them against strike actions, which would undermine the purpose for the Labour Commission’s establishment. Mr. Prempeh said apart from tarnishing the reputation of organisations whose workers embark on strikes, it would also discourage investors to do business in the country.
