Government to manage mass transport buses efficiently

Accra, Sept. 9, GNA – Mr Ken Anku, Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Roads and Transport, on Wednesday said the government has drawn up a plan to ensure that the Metro Mass Transport buses are efficiently maintained.

He said the Ministry is maintaining a regular link with the manufacturers of the buses in order to have a regular flow of spare parts for efficient maintenance.

Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, he said there are also spare parts available locally to maintain them when they break down.

Mr Anku said the buses are many but there are only a few expert hands to work on them. It is only natural that it takes time for a part to be fixed if they break down.

He said technicians from the country have been sent to Italy to source for spare parts. At the moment several containers of spare parts are at the harbour to be cleared.

He said the government has also had discussions with the Italian government to train technicians to enable them to provide efficient maintenance regime for the buses.

Mr Anku said the government wants to inject new buses into the system and had already got 250 with the help of the Dutch government. He said plans were also far advanced to supply new buses from China.
