Accra, July 19, GNA – Mr Nii Armah Ashitey, Greater Accra Regional Minister, said government was working hard to provide portable water as wel= l as restructure the Adabraka market to a modern one as part of the Millenniu= m City Project.
He assured the market women that their grievances would be addressed t= o improve the market before the end of the year.
The Minister, who said these when he visited the ma rket on Tuesday to ascertain challenges confronting the traders, advised traders, who sell along the road, to desist from the practice and operate at the market to prevent accident.
Mr Armah Ashitey said he would visit markets within the Metropolis to help address issues confronting traders. Madam Hajia Hasiah Awudu, acting Queen of the Adabraka market, called on the government to provide security to prevent rampant theft at the marke= t and to secure the safety of traders and buyers.
She said most traders had lost their money because of criminal activities, especially in the night and that the lack of electricity at the market was making life difficult for the sellers.
Madam Awudu said that refuse at the market possessed a threat to the life of the traders and customers, and called on the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) to address the issue before it resulted in an epidemic. She said the traders pay taxes to AMA but the taxes were not utilized for the intended purpose and the traders had to clean the market place. Madam Awudu called for the construction of new toilet as well as parking lodge to facilitate activities at the market.
The Acting market Queen advised the traders to keep their stores clean to promote sanitation.
