Government restores Teacher trainee allowance; trainees entitled to GHC400 monthly

As part of government’s drive to fulfill its campaign promises, Teacher trainees in Ghana would from next month make Ghc204 as allowance from the government.

The Students Loan Trust Fund (SLTF) would make the payments every month to teacher trainees.

The policy is expected to cost government an amount of Ghc144m every academic year.

State owned Daily Graphic, each student would be entitled to Ghc400 monthly but Ghc196 would be given directly to the institution to cater for feeding and utility fees.

The allowances were scrapped by the Mahama administration in the 2013/14 academic year.

Despite the restoration of the allowances, the Ghc204 figure represents a significant reduction from the Ghc452 – post deduction – teacher trainees were making before the Mahama government completely scrapped the policy.
