Government presents relief items to flood victims

Amaada (Ash), July 3, GNA – The government has presented some relief items worth GH¢115,400 to flood victims at Amaada and Abaasa Number two in the Atwima Mponua District.

The items included mattresses, bags of rice, Wellington boots, blankets, and bales of second hand clothing, plastic plates and cups. The donation was as a result of recent heavy rains which caused River Offin to overflow its banks displacing them.

Addressing the people, Mrs Anima Wilson, Deputy Ashanti Regional Minister who presented the items on behalf of the government advised the developers to cooperate with town and country planning personnel for proper layout.

She advised them not to build houses near river banks, water ways and flood prone areas.

The Deputy Ashanti Regional Minister also advised farmers not to farm along river banks and avoid felling trees around communities. She urged them to plant more trees to serve as wind breaks. Mrs. Theresah Adomako Tawiah, the District Chief Executive (DCE) received the items on behalf of the two communities. In another development, Mr. Thomas Kwakwa, DCE for Ahafo-Ano South also received similar donations made to Abaasa Number one, which was also affected by severe floods. 3 July 09
