Government praised for reviewing Taungya Reforestation system

Taungya (B/A), June 9, GNA- Nana Joseph Ackesson, Chief of Atabourso in the Techiman Municipality has commended the government for reviewing the Taungya Reforestation System. He said the decision by the government to offer 40 percent of the System to farmers and 40 percent to the Forestry Commission “is a demonstration of its commitment to the well-being of farmers”. Nana Ackesson, who is the Chairman of African Reforestation Union, which operates in Asubima forest under the Taungya system, made the commendation in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Taungya.

He said the Union, with more than 20 farming groups and about 2,500 members located at Offinso, Techiman and Nkoranza districts, was gratified with the government for its prompt response to the request to modify proceeds under the System. Nana Ackesson said the new system, which would also provide 10 percent to landowners would encourage more farmers to engage in afforestation. He advised members to take advantage of the rains and plant more tree seedlings to enhance the reforestation programme. 9 June 08
