Government informed about S.K.Oppong’s death

Accra (Greater Accra) 11 January 2002 – The Government was on Thursday officially informed of the death of Mr S.K. Oppong, the ace musician and actor.

Oppong who was the leader of the Osofo Dadzie Group, which thrilled television viewers in the 1970s with their drama series, died at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital on December 3, 2001.

A large delegation of family members, the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA), Ghana National Union of Concert Parties (GNUCP) and friends informed Mr Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey, Minister of Information and Presidential Affairs in Accra about the death and funeral arrangements.

According to the family, Oppong would be laid in state on February 1 for wake keeping and buried at the Osu Cemetery on February 2. They appealed to Ghana Television to show some of his old plays as a tribute to his memory.

Mr Obestebi-Lamptey described Mr Oppong as “a role model who educated Ghanaians through the arts.” He assured the delegation of government’s support during the funeral.

Mr Oppong, believed to be in his 60s, was a popular TV artiste whose performances spanned over three decades. The latest appearances starred him with the Kantata Troupe in another popular drama series.

The delegation included Mr Ben Asare, family head, Alhaji Sidiku Buari, President of MUSIGA, Mr David Dontoh, GNUCP, Ms Mercy Offei, an actress.
