Government did not hijack NFED-DCE

Bunso (E/R), Oct 10, GNA – The East- Mr Victor Asihene, Akyem District Chief Executive (DCE), has debunked allegations that government for political reasons has hijacked the non-formal education programme.

He said the Assembly had supported the programme, to make non-formal education accessible to people living in the rural areas.

Mr. Asihene was speaking at a five-day training workshop organized for 200 regional and district training officers of the Non-Formal Education Division (NFED) from the Eastern, Western, Central, Volta and Greater Accra regions at the Bunso Cocoa College on Thursday.

Mr Asihene urged the officers to explain government policies and programmes to keep the people well-informed on national issues. He cited the HIPC and the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) as topical issues, which required intensive explanation to the people. Mr Asihene said the assembly had provided solar panels to Aboabo, Tontro and Osonoase communities, to enhance non-formal education.

The Eastern Regional Director of the programme, Mr Samuel Antwi-Berko commended the East Akyem District Assembly for its support for the programme.

He urged the participants to be politically neutral so that “politics would not be read into your activities.” Mr Antwi-Berko appealed to opinion leaders in the communities to support the programme to ensure its success.
