Government has expressed its firm commitment towards the construction of roads at Manhean, near Amasaman, in the Greater Accra Region following a massive protest by some residents against the deplorable state of their roads.
Amasaman MP Emmanuel Nii Okai Laryea, on the floor of parliament on Friday, June 23, 2017, wanted to know when construction of the Manhean roads would be constructed.
In response, Deputy Roads and Highways Minister Kwabena Owusu Aduomi debunked assertions that the contractor had left site.
He noted that funds would be released soon for the project to be completed.
“Mr Speaker, the project is an ongoing project. We even had discussions with the contractor of this project when there was a demonstration on that section of the road. The contractor hasn’t abandoned the work, the project is ongoing and I can assure the Honourable Member of Parliament that it is an ongoing project,” Mr Laryea said.
He explained that the construction had delayed because of funds. “The issue at stake is for some payment to be made to the contractor and it all borders on funds,” he stated, adding: “Mr Speaker, this project is funded from the Consolidated Fund and as I explained earlier, the ministry, in consultation with the Ministry of Finance, is making plans to pay some significant amount to the contractor so that work can be continued.”
The Deputy Minister reiterated: “Mr Speaker, payment is not entirely in the hands of the Ministry of Roads and Highways. With projects funded from the Consolidated Fund, the ministry gets funds from the Ministry of Finance and that is why I indicated that the ministry is in consultation with the Ministry of Finance for payments of all such roads funded from the Consolidated Fund and I believe in no time some payments will start.”
