Hohoe, March. 18, GNA -Mr. Winfred Bekoe, Vice Principal of St Agartha Commercial College, Hohoe, on Wednesday described as unfortunate government’s inaction for the fixation of salary for teachers of private schools. He said currently, proprietors and proprietresses negotiated for fees to be charged by members of the Ghana National Association of Private Schools (GNAPS) at the detriment of salaries of private teachers.
Mr Bekoe, who was speaking to the Ghana News Agency in an interview, wondered why GNAPS and the Ghana Education Service (GES) could not fashion out modalities for salary increment for the various category of schools and their teachers in fulfillment of its equal work and equal pay policy. He noted that this anomaly was a disincentive to teaching and learning in private schools, stating that, when government increases salary for teachers in the public schools, their counterparts in the private schools were usually left unattended to. Mr. Bekoe therefore, called for dialogue between GNAPS and GES towards addressing the salary problem since private schools complement government’s effort in ensuring quality education in the country. He commended government for extending the supply of textbooks and other materials to private schools.
Mr Bekoe however, asked that teachers in private schools should be considered in training programmes and other government interventions aimed at improving teaching and learning in the country. ” When quality education improves, nobody will ask whether it was the private or public contribution that did the magic”, he said.
