Government asked to consider the payment of District Assembly members

Otwetiri-Akuapem(E/R), May 6, GNA- An opinion leader at Korkormu on the Koforidua-Mamfi road, Mr Anagli Mohammed Kabuna has proposed to the government to consider the payment of salaries to assembly members in other to make the Local Government system sustainable.

He explained that the job as an assembly member in the rural areas needed full commitment if the member would be successful in organizing the people to undertake development projects.

Mr Kabuna was speaking at a public forum organized by the Akuapem North District Secretariat of the National Commission on Civic Education(NCCE) at Otwetiri, as part of activities to mark this year’s Constitution Week celebration.

The theme for the celebration was: “Reducing Poverty through Citizens’ Participation in Local Governance”.

Mr Kabuna said if the District Assembly concept continued to be on voluntary basis, there would come a time when people would not be willing to offer themselves to serve as members.

The Queenmother of Mampong-Akuapem, Nana Akua Peibea, called on rural communities to revive their communal spirit to support all development projects that could bring positive change in their lifestyles.
