Goods worth thousands of Ghana cedis lost in fire

Sunyani, Jan. 13, GNA – Goods worth thousands of Ghana cedis were destroyed by fire at the Nana Bosoma Wednesday Market in Sunyani at the weekend.

The fire, which was said to have started around 2100 hours on Sunday, destroyed 10 shops, a shop for mobile phones and accessories, several bales of second-hand clothing, cooking utensils and smoked fish.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known but the Police and the Fire Service are investigating.

Narrating the incident to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sunyani on Wednesday, Mr. John Eshun, crew leader of Sunyani Municipal Office of the Ghana National Fire Service, said upon receiving

Information, personnel from his outfit rushed to the spot around 2130 hours only to meet part of the market in flames.

He said the fire had spread towards a nearby power cable of the Volta River Authority (VRA) and other stores.

“In the course of our operation to bring the fire under control, we salvaged a teenage girl, whose name was not immediately available who was then sleeping in one of the kiosks.

“The fire gave us a hectic time and we spent about an hour and a half before we could bring it down”, the crew leader added.

Mr. Eshun advised traders at the market to insure their goods against such disasters and to employ reliable security men who could report such disasters to the Fire Service for speedy intervention.

He also advised traders to allow enough room for ventilation when packing their goods after the day’s activities and use torch-light instead of candles and other forms of naked fire in their stores.

The crew leader appealed to the general public to alert the Fire Service early during fire outbreaks in order to save lives and property.
