Kwame Opoku has joined his new GoldStars team-mates in training as the Ghana Premier League champions step up preparations for the GHALCA Top 4 tournament and the 2026/27 campaign.
The 27-year-old forward was pictured at the University of Ghana Stadium on Tuesday, 25 August, taking part in his first sessions with the Bibiani-based club since completing his move from Asante Kotoko.
Opoku finalised his transfer to the Miners earlier this week and has signed a contract covering the upcoming season. His arrival gives GoldStars an experienced attacking option as they prepare for a demanding schedule, beginning with the pre-season tournament.
The forward is returning to the Ghana Premier League after spells outside the country with Algerian club USM Alger and Moroccan side Olympique Khouribga. He also previously played for Asante Kotoko, where he had two separate spells.
His first period at Kotoko produced the strongest figures of his career to date. During the 2020/21 campaign, Opoku scored six goals and supplied three assists in 16 appearances. Those performances helped secure his move to Algeria.
The forward’s second spell at Kotoko was less successful, with injuries limiting his involvement and preventing him from making the same influence as during his initial stint.
GoldStars will hope that the move to Bibiani provides Opoku with the platform to recover his best form. The club won the Ghana Premier League title in 2024/25 and will be aiming to mount another serious challenge for honours in the season ahead.
Opoku could make his first competitive appearance for GoldStars when the GHALCA Top 4 begins on Wednesday, 26 August 2026. The Miners are scheduled to open their campaign against reigning league champions Medeama at the University of Ghana Stadium.
They will face Dreams FC on Friday before concluding their group-stage fixtures against FC Samartex on Sunday.
The tournament offers Opoku an immediate chance to develop an understanding with his new attacking partners and gain valuable match minutes before the start of the new Ghana Premier League season.
For GoldStars, the competition will also provide an early test of their preparations after winning the league title in 2024/25. The club will be hoping that Opoku’s experience, combined with his previous record of contributing both goals and assists, can strengthen their bid for further success.
His first training involvement marks the beginning of his latest chapter in Ghanaian football, with the GHALCA Top 4 providing a quick opportunity to assess how he fits into the champions’ plans.
