Goldfields present equipment to University

Tarkwa, June 21, GNA- Gold Fields Ghana Limited, Tarkwa Mine, has presented equipment and food items worth 48.5 million cedis to five institutions at separate ceremonies at Tarkwa. The institutions were University of Mines and Technology, Angels of Hope Orphanage, Pepesa Early Childhood Development Centre (ECDC), Brahabobomon ECDC and Green Compound ECDC.

Presenting the geological equipment to the Geology Department of the UMT, Mr Gary Chapman, Mineral Resource Manager of the Company, said the university is strategically located within the company’s catchments area and has realized the immense support the company derives from the university. He said the university serves as a manpower resource base to his company and therefore deems it fit to present the equipment to help with the basic training of the students.

Mr Chapman praised the school for the quality of students it produces and that there was the need to maintain the standards hence the presentation. “We have seen the calibre of people who come out of this school, we are proud of the record and as a company that derives maximum support from the school, we would help the university to maintain that record.”

Prof Daniel Mireku Gyimah, the Vice Chancellor of the University, thanked the company for the donation. ”Mining companies in South Africa have taken over mining universities and if GFGL cannot do the same, it can give the university its maximum support.”

Mr Steve Yirenkye, Public Affairs Manager of the company, presented three bags of rice, three gallons of cooking oil, four boxes of biscuits and three crates of canned soft drinks to the Angel of Hope Centre. Pepesa ECDC had three bags of rice and three gallons of cooking oil. Brahabobom and Green Compound received two bags of rice and a gallon of cooking oil each.

Madam Yaa Frimpomaah Arhin, Mother of the Angel of Hope Orphanage who received the items, thanked the company for the support and called on others to come to their aid. 21 June 05
