Goh appeals to women to participate in district elections

Ho, June 22, GNA – Mr Mawutor Goh, the Ho Municipal Chief Executive, on Thursday said the country needed more women participation in decision making at the grassroots to improve the democratic process. He said though the country continued to chalk successes in democratic governance the involvement of more women would deepen the process.

Mr Goh said this when he opened a two-day workshop for aspiring assemblywomen in the Volta Region in Ho.

The National Association of Local Authority of Ghana (NALAG) organized the workshop with support from Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA).

Mr Goh, who is also the First Vice President of NALAG, said with over 50 per cent of the national population being women, it would only take a sizeable number of them to voice out their issues. “Serious issues concerning women cannot be addressed without the involvement of women themselves from the decision making level”, he said.

He said the absence of women at such levels created serious gaps and this is affecting the implementation very important issues concerning women.

“In the Ho assembly, for instance, there are only three women out of the 43 members.”

Ms Gladys Tetteh, Programme Officer of NALAG, said the workshop was to create a good environment and platform that would facilitate the participation of women in local government issues. 22 June 06
