Goal Post kills Girl, 7

A seven-year-old pupil of the Beposo Presbyterian Primary School in Sekyere Central District of the Ashanti Region died in a bizarre manner after a metal goal post fell on her.

Identified as Mercy Boateng, the innocent girl was said to be passing by a football field on Friday afternoon when she met her untimely death.

A ball was said to have been kicked into the net of the goal post and some students of the school pulled the net from behind in an attempt to retrieve the ball.

The intense pressure the boys applied whilst pulling the net made the metal goal post to fall heavily on Mercy who was passing by then.

The young girl collapsed instantly after the goal post hit her, having sustained head injury as a result. She was rushed to the hospital where she was declared dead.

Addai Brobbey, an eye witness told Daily Guide that the school was on break so some of the young boys took to the field to play football.

He noted that the ball entered the net and some of the boys, who were standing behind the goal post, pulled the net in an attempt to retrieve the ball.

Brobbey said the enormous pressure the boys applied while pulling the net led to the collapse of the metal goal post, which hit Mercy’s head.

According to him, Mercy had just been served food from the school programme and was passing by to enjoy her food when calamity struck.

He disclosed that Mercy’s death brought all activities in the school and the Beposo township to a halt as the people looked stunned.
