GNFS urges all to alert to prevent fires

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has asked everybody to be on the alert and desist from doing things likely to lead to outbreak of fire during the yuletide and the harmattan season.

A statement issued in Kumasi and signed by the Deputy Ashanti Regional Fire Commander, Paa Kwasi Adutwum, warned against the misuse of electricity, electrical gadgets and Christmas trees with fairly light decorations.

It also cited poor storage of flammables and combustibles as well as poor handling of fireworks, fire crackers and knock-outs, and said these should be avoided.

It cautioned the people, particularly, farmers not to set fires without any control measures – presence of fire volunteers, creation of fire belts and suppression means.

The statement also expressed concern about phony emergency calls by some unscrupulous elements in the society and asked that these must stop.

It called on all to back the fire fighters in their efforts to ensure that the Christmas festival and harmattan season passed off without any incident of domestic, industrial or wildfire.

The GNFS announced plans to step up fire safety education in schools, markets, worship centres and work places during the period.
