Kubori (N/R), March 25, GNA – The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) in the Northern Region has trained 214 volunteer fire-fighters in some selected communities in the “Overseas” area of the West Mamprusi District.
The cost of training estimated at 15 million cedis, was borne by World Vision Ghana.
The communities involved are Kubori, Loagri Number One, Yagaba, Yiragu, Kubugu, Garigu and Zanwara.
Speaking at the passing out ceremony at Kubori, Mr. Charles Yitah, Assistant Chief Fire Officer in charge of the Northern Region, said the region is an important food producing area and that it is time for the people to prevent the region from food insecurity by eradicating the phenomenon of bushfires.
He commended World Vision Ghana and the District Assembly for their efforts in making the training session possible, and urged other NGOs to emulate World Vision by helping GNFS to stem the tide of bushfires and preserve the environment.
The West Mamprusi Area Development Manager for World Vision, Madam Alhassan Fati, urged fire volunteers to make their impact felt when they return to their respective communities. She announced her organisation’s plans to train more volunteer fire fighters in the other communities in the area.
In an address read on his behalf by the District NADMO co-ordinator, Mr. Ishaq Chilala, the West Mamprusi District Chief Executive, Mr Abdul-Karim Amadu, said food items, human lives and property had suffered extensive damage by bushfires over the years, and reminded the people of the existence of PNDC Law 229 on bushfires.
“We derive our basic livelihood from the environment, and must therefore help to preserve it through bushfire prevention,” the DCE said. He announced that the District Assembly in collaboration with World Vision and other partner NGOs are currently working on a disaster plan for the district.
