GNFS assures public of continuous fight against fire outbreaks

The management of the Ghana National Fire (GNFS) Service said on Friday management had adopted measures aimed at curbing the trend and frequency of fire outbreaks in recent times.

Brigadier General John Bosco Guyiri, acting Chief Fire Officer of the Service, assured the public of the continuous approach to all fire related issues with seriousness that it deserved without favour, emboldened by the dictates of legislative instrument 1724.

Brig. Gen Guyiri gave the assurance at a press conference to sensitize the public on the recent fire outbreaks and strategies adopted by the Service to address the unfortunate incidents in Accra.

He said the phenomenon was beyond fire outbreak and fire fighting which required multi-sector collaboration.

“Management will continue with its regular meeting with strategic partners including Electricity Company, Water Company and Information Service Department among other institutions to collaborate efforts towards any eventuality,” he said.

He said an inquest about the causes of the recent fire outbreak pointed to the fact that there was blatant disregard for basic fire safety rules.

He said management had instructed the Regional and District Fire Commanders to engage the District and Metropolitan Assemblies to ensure safety measures in all their market centres throughout the country.

Brig. Gen Guyiri, appealed to the public to volunteer any information relating to the current spate of fires in the country.

He commended the government for equipping the Service, adding that “without the new injection of equipment into the Service we will not have been able to effectively handle the recent spate of fire.”

The acting Chief Fire Officer further commended the media saying “we want to see the media as partners of development to inform and ultimately effect attitudinal change.”
