GNCRC appeals to the media to highlight children’s issues

An appeal has been made to the media to do more to help educate the public on issues bothering on child’s rights and protection.

Mr Barima Akwasi Amankwaah, Programme Officer of the Ghana Non-Governmental Organizations Coalition on the Rights of the Child (GNCRC), said matters affecting the welfare and growth of children needed to engage serious attention.

This would help to prevent their abuse in the society.

He was speaking at a day’s sensitization workshop held for some selected journalists in Kumasi.

It was meant to assist them to have a better understanding of the Child Protection Policy and Procedures.

Mr Amankwaah expressed discomfort with the situation where some people accused children of witchcraft, something that often provided the pretext to maltreat and subject them to all forms of abuse.

There were also the indignities of child labour and trafficking.

He said it was important for parents to live up to their responsibilities by giving their children quality education.

Mr John Kwadwo Owusu, Executive Director of the Environmental Association of Ghana (EPAG), said his organization had intensified its advocacy on gender and children issues.

Its also implementing a five-year “Girl Power Project’ at Piase, Aputuoga and Kuntanase in the Bosomtwe District, to support the education of young girls and vocational training for those who had dropped out of school.

The project is being funded by the Netherlands Embassy in Accra.
