GNAT Strike

Bolgatanga, Nov 3, GNA – Mr Anthony Aziabah, Bolgatanga Municipal Director of Education, on Friday appealed to striking teachers to call off their strike for the sake of their pupils.

He made the appeal during a meeting held between Mr Robert Atiah, Local Secretary of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) in the Talensi-Nabdam district, and the Senior Management Team of the Bolgatanga Municipal Education Directorate.

Mr Aziabah said the continued absence of teachers in the classroom was making the public to lose sympathy for their fight for a just cause. He urged leaders of the striking teachers to impress upon their members to go back to work while negotiations continued for better conditions of services for them.

Mr Atiah said he would convey the Director’s plea to his colleagues and to appeal to them to resume work by November 6, 2006. He, however, cautioned the Government to satisfy the demands of teachers or they would resort to another means to press home their demands. Mr Atiah, who is also the Chairman of “Concerned Teachers Association,” expressed regret at GNAT’s silence on the level of negotiation so far reached with the Government and thereby creating unnecessary anxiety among teachers.
