GMWU to launch education fund

Obuasi, Sept 27, GNA – The national secretariat of the Ghana Mine Workers Union (GMWU) is to launch an education endowment fund at Obuasi on Thursday to raise funds to support the education of the wards and children of its members.

The launch is expected to be addressed by three Ministers, namely the Minister of Education, Youth and Sports, the Minister of Mines and the Minister of Manpower Development and Employment.

In a statement signed by Mr Robert Cole, the General Secretary of GMWU, the union explained that the fund would serve as a bursary scheme to support the education of members’ children and wards, who are in second-cycle institutions.

It said that decision had been taken because it had been universally recognised that human resource development was the major prerequisite for national development.

“The setting up of this fund is a modest contribution the union is making towards the realisation of this statement”. The statement added that the bursary scheme was also a demonstration of the union’s commitment to the sustainable development agenda “which has become a global phenomenon.”

It announced that the launch of the fund formed part of the GMWU’s 60th anniversary celebrations.
