Global Fund Director in Ghana for visit

Accra, Aug 3, GNA – The Executive Director of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, Dr Richard Feacham, arrived in Accra on Monday for a five-day visit to Ghana.

Speaking to newsmen, Dr Feacham said the Fund, which was initiated by Mr Kofi Annan, UN Secretary General, was to support the treatment of HIV/AIDS, Malaria and Tuberculosis in developing countries. He said the Fund had approved two drugs for Malaria, one each for HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis for Ghana and praised the country for being the first to benefit from the initiative.

Dr Feacham would call on President John Agyekum Kufuor and hold talks with Dr Kwaku Afriyie, Minister of Health and Professor Sakyi Amuah, Director General of the Ghana AIDS Commission.

He would also visit various projects being financed by the Fund at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Agormanya, Dodowa and other sites. The Global Fund Executive Director was met on arrival by the Deputy Minister of Health, Mr Moses Dani Baa and Dr George Amofa, Director of Public Health, Ministry of Health.
